Asmara, Eritrea

Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea, is located in the central part of the country at an elevation of approximately 2,325 meters (7,600 feet) above sea level. With a population of about 800,000, it is the largest city in Eritrea and serves as the political, cultural, and economic center of the nation. The city's architecture is a unique blend of Italian colonial influences and modernist styles, reflecting its vibrant history and the period of Italian rule from the late 19th century until World War II. Asmara is often referred to as the "New Rome" due to its well-preserved examples of early 20th-century modernist architecture, which led UNESCO to designate it as a World Heritage site in 2017.
