Jijiga, Ethiopia

Jijiga is a city located in the eastern part of Ethiopia, serving as the capital of the Somali Region. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,600 meters (5,250 feet) above sea level, it lies near the border with Somalia. The city has a strategic importance due to its proximity to the Somali frontier and serves as a vital hub for trade and commerce between Ethiopia and Somalia. The population of Jijiga is diverse, comprising various ethnic groups, predominantly the Somali ethnic community, which reflects the region’s cultural and historical ties with Somalia. As of the last census, the city is estimated to have a population of over 100,000 residents.
